Heh, talk about your primitive strings. They’re really making your job harder than it needs to be, aren’t they?

So, did you by any chance happen to insert the translated (and truncated) dump back into the ROM? I’d like to see if what I did actually works, because if it does … wouldn’t that just be the bee’s knees?

(Merry Christmas, by the way.)

has the reinforcement glitch been addressed for anyone? I would check myself but am so very tired of playing through chapter 7 just to see it happen again....

Pretty confident this has been fixed.  It was when I tested, anyway.

It's been inserted, but I have to do the rest of the は hacks before everything works correctly (speaking of, if you know any cases besides the five I mentioned, that would speed things up a bit).  This shouldn't be difficult, but I'm home with my family and that leaves a lot less time for hacking.  :p

So you really were able to substitute different things for は based on context, then? Nifty.

Uh, a hastily written list:

• “ chanted ” (from a tome)
• “ used ” (a staff)
• “ earned ” (experience points)
• “ lost ” (experience points)
• “ transported” (newline, character [with Warp Staff])
• “ had a(n)” (newline, item)
• “ took the” (newline, item)
• “ had ” (gold in possession)
• “ took the ” (gold)
• “ transformed into a(n) ” (type of dragon, newline [which you have to take out because the full stop would look stupid by itself on the next line ])
• “[null]” (in a few cases: 43111, 43103, 431bd …)

Note that I’m not sure exactly how the gold strings are used.

If you are to be away from your computer for a while, I would really appreciate if you could make the programme you’re using to re-insert text dumps into the ROM available to me.

That way, I could test things for myself, and give you a final copy of the translated dump and a list of any changes that need to be hacked in when you get back.

great success on the new patch, RPGuy96. All the issues appear to have been addressed and the game runs nicely now.

I also wanted to know when you are able to use items, like an Angelrobe, as using it during battle, causes it to glitch.

This was noted earlier in the thread, but there was nothing said about when it was possible to use items.

Well, for the time being, you could use cheats to increase the unit’s HP (and discard the item).

Bleh.   I'll look into that as soon as I get a chance, which leads me to...

EDIT: Fixed now.  Off by a byte, blarg.

I have most of my stuff with me (this week, anyway), so I should be able to get another hacking session in tomorrow.  The only thing I don't have access to right now is a debugger, but I can probably fix that.  I wrote several perl scripts to do dumping and insertion, and they aren't exactly...intuitive.  I will try to have this stuff finished up pretty soon (the ending, though, might be a different matter).

EDIT:

Though, if you want to test for me, I'm obviously not going to complain about that.  Here's a quick patch that might have the は hacks working, or it might crash the game.
EDIT: actual patch is now more up to date.  If you want to test, try that!

Two things to keep in mind:
1) I did *some* testing and I already had to cut some strings down in size.  I tried to avoid being awkward, but if you can suggest something better that fits I'm all for it.
2) Like the kanji, the code for a period isn't working right and displays garbage.  This isn't terribly hard to work around, I just haven't done it yet.

And two things to look for:
1) Other places where は is used.  I've set it up so I can turn [something]は[somethingelse][action] into [something][action1][somethingelse][action2]
2) The dreaded line overruns, which means the string in question needs to be chopped up further.

Just wanted to thank you for taking your time making a quality translation for this game. I just played through it again, and got a much better understanding for the storyline.

Once again, I had mucho fun, all thanks to your patch.

odd, despite the latest patch of Dec 26, the item glitch still seems to occur. I tried using both fe3.ips and fe3v1.1.ips to no avail.

At the risk of sounding completely ignorant, how does the patch work? I can't imagine being able to modify my SFC cartridges...

Well, I can imagine it, but I'm kind of afraid to do it...

You don't have to involve your actual cartridges.

The patches are for the ROMs of the games, which are dumps/computer copies of the real game. ROMs (at least commercial ones) are illegal, mind you, so don't go requesting for one

So I guess that means that while downloading ROMs off the internet is illegal, making them for my own personal use is not?

I've heard a lot of good things about this translation patch, you see, but until now I've been avoiding ROMs like the Plague. But I've got an FE3 cartridge in my possession, so if I'm within my rights to copy the data onto my computer... and if I can figure out how to do so... which, I presume, is what emulators are for...

If you could figure out how to dump the data, that would be definitely more legal. You probably could, although it might be costly.

However I heard that it's only legal to keep copies for 24 (or was it 48) hours at most, but I'm not familiar with legalities ^^;;;

Emulators are used for running ROMs, yeah.

New patch up, woo.  See first post for details.

Sorry!  I realized where the error was, but somehow I screwed up and it wasn't included in the patch I released in December.  It is fixed now, I tested it myself with the patch I put up.

The latest patch looks good. Amongst some minor bugs, I noticed that it didn't load Julian's Book 2 alternate ending (if Rena died).

I thought I did those [alternate endings] right, though they were a little weird...Do you happen to have a savestate near the ending that you're willing to donate?  I'm too lazy to play through the whole chapter (<_<), and there's other stuff I need to make sure works anyway.

Should be attached ^^

Also, is it possible to change the width of the dialogue font (perhaps to make them all slightly narrower)?

Thanks.  I'll get to testing that soon.

EDIT: Soon became now.  I was able to clean almost everything up, everything except for the very last string before the credits roll, to be specific.  Can you translate that one for me?

And I was actually thinking about making the dialogue font variable width again, principally so most of the dialogue fits in one box like the original and not have one word or so overrun to a second like it does now.  It's not terribly complicated from a parser/inserter perspective - the only tricky bit would be to actually get the font and the associated width table.  Celice suggested TOKOL in the old topic and I'll look at that, I guess.  I thought about using the Final Fantasy Advance font, to the point where I actually looked through the FFVIA ROM for it, but I couldn't find the font data.  Must have been compressed or something.

Hmm, I must have missed this...

Do you have a screenshot of the last string? I'm not sure which one you're referring to >___<

Also, I was wondering if we should advertise the patch around some translation sites? I'd still like to fix up some of the dialogue though (I've already fixed up over half of it, but I kind of got lazy around Christmas).

As for putting the patch up on translation sites, sure, I think it's ready for that.  Got any in mind?

I'm dancing right on a necropost here (sorta), BUT.

The patch does not work for me DX

I downloaded it, and renamed it to fit my SRM file, but the whole game is still in Japanese. Menus, chitchat, ect.

Anyone know what's up?
