I'm dancing right on a necropost here Necroposting is allowed in topics that have been pinned. Now as for your question--What emulator are you using?

If it's in Japanese and not crashing or something equally catastrophic, it sounds like your emulator isn't applying the patch Unless you have a really old version of ZSNES, it should be doing so automatically, so are you sure you renamed the .ips correctly? (Note that it should be the same name as the .smc file, not .srm, though it's almost certain those have the same name anyway.) Should be something like fireemblem3.ips and fireemblem3.smc.
If you're really desperate you could download SNEStools or LunarIPS or something and hard patch it yourself (I'd back up first, in case patching it *does* cause it to start crashing or something equally catastrophic).
(Actual patch news - I'm sitting on a few bug fixes right now - obtaining items from villages and "Save Game?" occasionally being in cavespeak - I just need to get motivated enough to fix a few more - chiefly garbage coming up due to the participle code in the battle text - before I put a new patch up. Apologies for so little news for so long, I've been busy lately and bugfixing isn't the most exciting thing in the world.)
(Another aside - anyone know anything about title screen replacement? That's another thing I need to get motivated enough to do.)

What would qualify as an "old" version of ZSNES? I've had mine for a few years without updating I'm afraid...
On a side note, I will add that my FE3 srm and smc files are in the same directory as my FE4 ones, and my FE4 patch works.

Like pre 0.96 I think. I've had auto patching working on ZSNES as old as about that its easy to tell if you're using a version from that epoch. Transparency is emulated

The readme file that comes with the patches says version 1.42 of ZSNES is incompatible with the patch. NOTE: This patch does not work on ZSNES 1.42. It does, however, work with the newest version, 1.51.

... That's a cruel and sick joke.  ; Ok, Emulator updating tiem! UPDATE: Ok, I have 3 ZSNES emulators. Version 1.36: The game loads, gets to the title screen, and crashes. Version 1.42: The game loads, but the patch does not work. Version 1.51: Same as 1.36. As for my SNES9x (which I rarely use due to inferior sound quality and less hotkeys).... its a version 1.40. Loading the fe3.ips causes the game to load, then bug out on the title screen. the fe3v11.ips just causes SNES9x to crash instantly. >{

Yes, I also have it crashing on the title screen, this is with zsnes151, and I am using the auto IPS patcher. I tried hard patching it with IPSwin, but then the rom completely failed (black screen).

Hmm, it's probably either a header problem or due to a bad rom. For the latter, if you can play the game without the patch fine, it's probably not this, obvious.
For the header, try adding/removing the header using SNESTool. I can't remember which one to do (the readme file should tell you).

For our purposes:
1) Double click the SNESTool program 2) Press A to Add Header or D to Delete Header 3) Navigate with the arrow keys to find your rom (left goes back a directory, right goes forward a directory) 4) Press Enter on the rom file to add/delete the header 5) Press Esc to exit the program

Thanks for the help. I added a header with Snestool (no to both the hirom and disable static rom/ram questions) and that seemed to work.

Well, that's good. Maybe I should include header instructions or a headerless patch in the zip? I thought headerless ROMs were pretty uncommon, but perhaps not.

Okay, i'm pretty dumb at this kinda thing. So I d/led the patch. Is there something I'm supposed to do now before I load up the game so it works?

The link in the first post doesn't work, so I used the rapidshare link. I opened the readme, and (there was a new patch released right? Unless I've been mistaken) it appears to be the older patch. Could you, by any chance, upload the newer patch somewhere?
Or fix the link the first post, whatever works. Though, you did say you probably wouldn't be reuploading the newer versions of the patch, so... :p

The link in the first post has been fixed. (For the curious, RIT changed their personal webhosting server a while back, and apparently has cut off access to the old one.)
Edit: As a bonus, I even put up a new patch. Nothing terribly exciting, just a couple of bugfixes

Thanks. Say, isn't it about time this patch goes up on a site like romhacking.net? I was rather shocked this patch was out. I was just going to drop in and check up on the progress and wow, a lot has been done.

Heh, we talked about that a little while ago, but I wanted to do some bugfixing first. Now that that's taken care of, I'll submit it to romhacking.net.
