I have a question about the patch. I've been playing, and when I did chapter 1, it was fine, except levelups only showed the numbers, not the stats that went up. After I got to chapter 2 though, all battle "commands" (like "Marth attacks Thief! 8 Damage!") are replaced with random garblings. I'm using ZSNES 1.36. Is this a problem with the patch, or should I try a different emulator?
It sounds like you possibly have the wrong version or have a unheadered ROM. ZSNES also isn't very friendly with this game at the moment. I can confirm the patch works on ZSNES 1.51, although the combat window still flickers. SNES9x 1.51 and BSNES 0.29 run it very well. (BSNES obviously better, notably in the sound department, but SNES9x has Savestate support) If it avoids the flickering, SNES9X would probably be the best to recommend. I prefer BSNES, but it's not as user friendly, and it has insane system requirements.
After some testing, I have to agree that SNES9X 1.51 is the best emulator to recommend. I've encountered no issues with it and it has savestates, which can really take the edge off of the game for an inexperienced player. I've also come up with three bugs: 1) The text message for the Maph spell in battle (and probably the Dark Orb as well) is incorrect. It says "{attacker_name} blocked the attack", but it should be "{attacker_name}'s attack was blocked". 2) The terrain type "Corridor" has the text flag "No mount", but does not actually prevent mounted units from entering the square. The terrain type "Floor" does not have a flag, but mounted units cannot enter it. It's unclear which is correct, as the Corridor type is often used as cobbled roads, which should not prevent fliers from moving, but it is also used in the prison, where dialog implies that mounts cannot be used, but they can. On the other hand, Floor is sometimes used as elevated exteriors (and has a battle graphic which is clearly exterior) and yet fliers cannot move on to it. Possibly an error in the original game data. 3) Purchasing an object for storage rather than a character results in a single Japanese character and an "s" printing. Presumably an untranslated string. Really enjoying the game now that I've gotten over the early difficulty. Oguma and Doga just crush people.

So I'll try it with snes9x

Thanks for bringing those up, Devon. I'll get to them as soon as I get a chance. Quick comments, more so I don't forget what I've done so far:
1) Found this, I could fix it right now if I wanted to squeeze "'s attack was blocked!" in 9 characters or so. I think I'm going to take a look at the battle code soon (this weekend?) and see what I can do about getting multiple line messages. That'll let me be more verbose in a number of other places if I can pull it off.
2) Fixed this. Not quite sure how it happened, but, hey, it was an easy fix.
3) Slightly more complicated. It's actually supposed to print out "{weapon name} was sent to storage." but I changed my syntax for referring to {weapon name} and forgot to change the actual entry. Fixed that, but now it's pointing to the old weapon table and the result of that is cavespeak. So I just need to fix that pointer, which should be easy to find

No can do, buddy. If you had read the rules, you would have known we don't tolerate rom requests around here. See you in a few weeks.

"Not working" can mean quite a few things. For example, does the game crash- if so, at what point? Or is the game still in Japanese?

fe3.zip linked in the opening post is broken. Unexpected EOF when decompressing. Incidentally, the version currently hosted on RHDN is not broken, and is v0.97 althugh it reads otherwise.

Hey, guy with only 1 other post here. D:
... But anyway, I've been playing the Monshou no Nazo translation. Congrats on the progress. I've been waiting for a translation of Marth's stories for a while (And now that I see how they went... honestly I guess I was expecting more from them, but I can't blame that on you, lol.)
Anyway, moving on. I tried reading the thread for a bit to see what glitches have come up, and I thought I'd contribute some myself, but now I forget what was already brought up, so I'll probably sound redundant. Gah.
Aw, well. Time for me to babble:
1) Some combinations of saveslots/chapter names seem to cause stray text to sometimes appear on the savegame select menu. I've seen this come and go a few times, and there's probably a lot of combinations that could cause this. I don't know if the effort to fix it would be worth it.
2) If you restart a map by a soft reset and re-loading your savefile, after selecting your units on the map and pressing start, an option prompt will come up. The option appears as complete gibberish. (For reference, the first option makes the map's opening cutscene play again, while the second skips straight to your turn on the map.) (I might be able to get a screencap of this, if requested.)
3) Various text overflows in battle screens. One example that happened to me frequently is in the Coliseum (Yes, I am a bad, bad cheat.), "Enemy stopped the blow!". Other ones include characters with long names, like Mallessia or Ellerrean, using heal magic. (I might be able to get a screencap of this, if requested.), there are also text overflows in other areas which are less noticeable.
4) The ending of Book 1, I got another option that displayed in gibberish. Selecting the first option in that showed me the message "And so, time passes", surrounded by what looked like corrupted graphics, before starting up Book 2's story mode. (I may be able to get a screencap of this.) (Also, I really hated myself when I realized character stats didn't travel over.)
5) I'm not sure if this glitch is caused by the patchings, and it may not be, but Chainy can levelup while transformed in the arenas (Anywhere else, she can't.) and keep any HP Gain he (At least I think Chainy's a he, sure can't equip a Lady Sword.) gets even when de-transformed. I've abused this to it's full advantages. (HOLY CRUD IT'S A 52-HP MAXED STAT EST)

Thanks. I think I know what's causing 1, I thought I fixed 2 but I guessed I missed it, and I can fix 3. That leaves 4, which I'm guessing is a save screen and I can try and handle it, and 5, which I'm pretty sure is the game's fault and not mine. More stuff on the stack for version .971, I suppose.
Oh, and the EOF thing is probably your unzipper - I'm apparently using an odder compression format than I thought (see a few pages back for discussion), but if you can pick it up from elsewhere that works too. I will (attempt to) fix this on the next release.

Ah, dur, I think I just noted something else. In the menus for item-trading/selecting units, if a character on the far right end has a long name (The character this most frequently happens with is Ricardo), it's last few letters may stick around in some places they aren't supposed to. I'll probably need a screenshot to explain this one: (For refererence, that stray letter a was from Minverva's name.) (Yubello's also causes it too.) My apologies for missing posting this one right away.

That, happily, is already on the stack (Vincent brought it up and it annoys me, too). I've already got code to do truncation for other stuff, it's just a matter of finding the right call. I'm going to try and figure out the highlighting, as well, but no specific promises there.

Wheee. Using the translation patches (And lots of exploitation and savestate-abusing quasi-cheating), I was able to complete the game.
(Just a bit of note, it seems anything in the ending sequence that happens "after" the character records, including some of the credits and this, uh, sequence of scrolling text with some numbers and the Falchion in a fiery background or whatever... that's still untranslated. Makes me wonder about what that was. And also the dev team, they seemed pretty small for a Super Famicom game.)

I'm pretty sure this is in the original game. I can't see how a text patch would change the game mechanics. The arena uses a slightly different combat processing than the main game, and they probably forgot to account for Chainy's shapeshifting. Chainy's a man as far as I know. He certainly looks feminine, and someplace in the game it does say "she", but the most important thing would be the end-game recap, which clearly says "he", as does the villager in Aritia when you first meet him. Wheee. Using the translation patches (And lots of exploitation and savestate-abusing quasi-cheating), I was able to complete the game.

Hmm. When I beat Book 1, it scrolled the names of each chapter, and how many turns it took me to clear it, then it gave me my total. On another note, unfortunately I haven't been recording them (having too much fun playing), but there are a number of text errors in the game, mostly wrong words (usually a sentence that changes tense half way though, probably a result of frequent rewording) or just awkward dialog, like Nina's "...he protected a young me." (said of Camus) which would probably work better as "...he protected my younger self.", if not simply "...he protected me." Having just finished Book 1, the context for most of the text is still fresh in my mind, so I'd be willing to proof the text if you like. (And Book 2, if necessary, after I finish it.) I find that proofing your own work is much harder than you might think.

Yeah, there are some word choices and awkward dialogings which I think should be adjusted.
In particular, the use the word "Also", as if it was a Valley Girl's "Like, you know". ;P
There are many instances where it doesn't flow well, for example, in Book 3, Lang's "Also I must execute them", and Jeigan's "Also we do not have the power to beat General Lang yet." Sometimes it is used where a "But", "and", "or", or "besides" would fit better. It seems to be the single most common word used in the translation.
(The blasted game never did tell me why Camus is still alive, unless I missed a detail...)
I should probably try going back and making note of many of the "could be improved" dialogs myself. I think someone's been recording stuff based off an outdated version of the translation patch, if that helps...

Ok, I am about to finish FE5 Thracia, and was going to play this one next. I was just wondering what emulator I should use. Now BSNES seems preferable to me with the far superior sound and generally more accurate emulation...however no savestates. Do you really need savestates for this game? I don't like to arena abuse BTW, how difficult is it?

Fire Emblem games are generally fairly difficult.
I savestate-abused like the dickens. Probably wasn't as necessary as I thought though, since I have a preference for getting other maps done "fast" over proper strategy.
If you don't like savestate-abuse, then feel free to use BSNES. I use BSNES for other things, myself. (Namely, loading stuff with the bS-X Bios, and BS-X Slotted carts, the latter of which no other emulator I recall supports.)
I'm sticking to SNES9X for this game, myself.
(As for Arena grinding, I feel that considering one of the secret shops in Book 2, it's more important to grind for money than experience... So if you just felt like having your max-stat guy constantly win, that could still work out good.)

If anybody wants to fix up the script, feel free : o I know there's tons of points where the dialogue doesn't flow well. Sometimes I suppose I'm not thinking in English, and hence why some bits sound weird (and the abundance of "Also"s and "No matter what" etc.). Anyway, the script file is here and you can view it in Notepad or any decent word processing program. If you do change anything, please add some distinguishable brackets to indicate the changed text. Also let me know if you're going to proof-read it, so I can remember who's working on it ^^

Well, I tried looking at it and making some adjustments. Unfortunately I realized half-way in that my brackets don't look distinguishable from the code brackets or that one part in brackets Maria says... Aw, well. I spent too much time on this for today. I'll upload my progress and work on it more tomorrow. http://kiddocabbusses.nothingforfree.com/FE3stuff/FE3writing.txtIt seems like the script here lacks some text like the rolling class demo and the "World Map" story narrations, the later of whichi I think might also do good with some adjustment. Anyway, I tried changing some of the lines I felt had some grammar errors or didn't really fit well. There were also some instances where I tried to give a bit of flavor to the text which may or may not be appreciated. If you have the time, feel free to cherry pick and ask questions about some of the choices I made. (Although sometimes I may not have the answers. Usually when I rewrite statements that otherwise make sense, it's because I feel a thesaurus could help liven the text up, but sometimes I tried some rewriting and the original words flowed a bit better.... aw, well.) Hopefully you can spot the changes I made and see if they're helpful.

Definitely. There are some briefings in Book 1 that have tense changes in the middle of sentences, and there are some in Book 2 that are missing words, usually short ones like "is", "it", "he", or "are". I guess I'll proof the edits tomorrow then.

Chapter intros can be found here. The class scroll can be found here, but the space available for those is very limited. Even if Vincent accepts changes to that I might not be able to fit them in the game.
