Fire Emblem 3 translation patch, I'm hacking, Vincent's translating, and Cleteromagos and AceNoctali provided some much-needed translations as well.  Additional editing help provided by Devon_v and KiddoCabbusses.  Nearly all the text is translated, and nearly everything that's translated is in the game.

New Patch (6/21, version 0.98):
New script revision!  As always, credit goes to Vincent, who had help from Devon_v and KiddoCabbusses editing.

Chances are slim I'll remember/be motivated enough to do this with new patches.

As a bit of a status update, all of the ending stuff (that I could find) has been dumped, and most of what Vincent has translated has made it back in the game.  It just doesn't work terribly well at the moment.  In particular, the bit that shows how many turns each chapter took is behaving strangely.

IMPORTANT: TRANSLATION REQUEST

The in-battle text is proving to be a bit of a stumbling block, so we need some kind soul to give us a hand and translate it.  The text in question can be found here:

A couple of notes:

1. Make sure your browser reads this as unicode - if you see garbage, it's probably because your browser thinks it's ASCII.  In Firefox, go to View -> Character Encoding -> Unicode to fix this, it's probably similar in IE/Opera/Safari/whatever.

2. If the [start] and [end] tags are annoying, I can get rid of them.  These are all one line things, anyway.

3. [d1] and [d3] are kanji that I don't have a textual representation of.  I, do, however, have a pictorial representation:

The two characters that occupy Marth's name are [d1] and [d3].  If somebody types them out, I can stick them into the dump and clean it up a bit.

4. If you're familiar with the game, you'll notice that some of the stuff is a little awkward.  For example, the string for "casts" or "uses" or whatever it translates to for magic is placed after the name and spell in the game (example: Rena heal casts). Fortunately, I think I can change the order of the strings there (to something reasonable, like: Rena casts heal), so don't worry too much about that. 

If there's anything else I can do to help, let me know.

However, I don’t think the second kanji in your screenshot, 話, fits in [d3]’s spot as per the dump. Are you sure about it?

And speaking of the dump … you’ll be needing to re-order quite a few strings, it seems. So would it be all right if I posted an explanation for each thing? A straightforward translation isn’t really practical.

Second:  Hmm.  You're right, it's represented as 00d3 in the battle strings, but that's different from the 00d3 that I put in Marth's name.  That's curious, I'm not sure why it's using different kanji codes.  Unfortunately, that means the other kanji is possibly/probably incorrect.  Fortunately, there's not a lot of kanji there.  I can screencap what the strings should be if you'd like, but my lack of Japanese prevents me from writing them in text form.  :\

Third: The lack of a direct translation is what tripped Vincent up, I think.  Explanations would make my life (relatively) easier, and would be greatly appreciated!

Anyway! I haven’t got much experience with this FE. I played a few chapters in a while ago, and came across this thread when I was looking to get back into it. I just re-played the first chapter, so let’s hope I get everything right.

I’m going through this in order of appearance, and ignoring the [d3] entries for now. I’ve added “A”, “X”, et cetera for clarity.

This is a particle, usually referred to as either the subject or topic marker. In some cases, it appears after a character’s name, preceding the rest of a sentence. Tricky — I think you’ll need to nullify this one.

This is easier! Replace it with “’s” (apostrophe-S) and you’re set. It’s a particle that shows ownership, you see.

As far as I know, its only use is in announcing someone’s attack. “Character攻撃”, the game says, but 攻撃 (= attack) wasn’t in the text dump.

X points of damage were given. (To the enemy, unnamed — it can be deduced from the context who’s being hurt, you see.)

(I suggest you replace は with “ got ” [with those spaces], and make this string “ points of experience.” Only problem is, does は make a reappearance? Also note: alternatives to “got” are “won”, “gained”, “acquired”.)

(Okay, は does indeed make multiple appearances. I don’t know how good your 1337 haxxor skillz are, but … yeah. If this is a case of replacing what’s there, it seems you’ll have to replace は with a space. That would make this “Character X points of experience got!” or something …)

(I presume this is used with healing staves? It just says “Used B”, but if the character’s name is mentioned — which is highly likely — then は is making an unfortunate entry [“CharacterはBをつかった”]. A late-game save file or screenshots would help.)

(Remember, [d1] is 終. This says “Finished B” or “Ended B”, but I have no idea what the context is. A status effect, perhaps? Once again, は would be there before this string, after the staff-user’s name.)

Well, it looks as though I need to play more to fully understand the usage of all of these. At the very least, I’ll give certain translations for these:

Awesome.  I don't have a lot of time at the moment (class at 2), but I'll try to address a few things and then do some more later.

And, with that, you have solved the mystery of [d3]!  I know the string at 42e6d shows up when you attack, and the two kanji you typed are exactly what shows up in the game, so, woo, that's what it should be.  I've updated the dump to reflect that (and [d1]), and I'll list the things things that changed below.  (Note that I also thought 攻 was 断).

I'm actually still not sure if all of the kanji are correct there.  If it doesn't make any sense, I'll try and figure out what causes it (critical hit, maybe?) and throw up a screenshot.  Well, I'll try and figure out what causes it anyway and see if it matches.

As for late game saves, there's a final chapter save for each book on FESS4.  Here's the link:

Those are what I'm using to test the endings, hopefully they'll work. I've got a save around B1Ch12, if that would be helpful, but I think the endgame saves have the biggest variety as far as weapons go.

That's all the time I have right now; thanks a million, and I'll try and address individual points (and maybe start actually hacking these in!) later.

EDIT:
I'm home again.  I added all your stuff in, it seems to be working pretty well.  は is going to be tricky, though, as you suspected.  Right now I have it as "got" for "Character got X EXP!", but you were right about it showing up with staves:

I got a critical hit while I was testing, and three exclamation points showed up.  So I'm fairly confident that "輸送の隊撃!!!" is for critical hits, even if I got the kanji wrong.

Levelling up is a bit weird.

So what the heck is that 2 for? (Edit: Duh.  2 was Kain's level after he levelled up.  So a literal translation would be something like "Kain became level 2"?)  And then the stats that actually got levelled up:
Stat X あがった!
I guess could be changed to "Skill +1", with nothing after it, unless you can suggest something more fitting, now that you know the context.

Yeah, he did the whole main script in like 3 weeks, it was nuts.  I could barely keep up, and I was just correcting the dump whenever he noticed anything wrong.  <_<

Nice to see somebody working on the in-battle text ^^

My holidays started recently, so I had time to work on the endings. I can't seem to find an option to attach files via PM, so I've attached the endings file here.

It's been a while since I last worked on the translations, so some of the character or chapter names might be inconsistent.

Huzzah!  Then I think all that's left is about half the in-battle stuff, unless I missed some of the ending text.  And a couple of ugly bugfixes.

Unfortunately, I have no idea how to insert the endings back into the game...guess I'll try and figure that out now.

EDIT:

This is going tolerably well.  With luck I'll have a Christmas present ready by Saturday.  If not, I'm going to be away from my hacking computer for two weeks, so let's hope I have something ready before then.  <_<

That most certainly does NOT say “critical hit”. However, this is probably another case of mistaken kanji identity, and so that most likely is where the crit string goes (judging by the exclamation
marks ).

I’m still thinking it would be best to make it into a space. It’s annoying that the original dev team couldn’t write a programme sophisticated enough to have variables within strings, or we wouldn’t have this problem of them being cobbled together in such an unclear and conflicting way …

To give a verbatim, “ordered” translation: “As for Cain, Level: 2 became.”

は is a space. Make レベルが into “rose to Level ”. Make になった into “.”

And I know it isn’t my place, but for crying out loud, spell the damned name with a C.

To reiterate: the stat names as used in battle text appear nowhere else.

So, with Strength for instance, you can make it “Strength rose by ”, then make あがった! into just an exclamation mark. Easy.

Vincent has complete control over the translation, except in cases where I have to edit for space reasons.  That allows me to pass the buck in situations such as this!

Either way works fine for me, though I kind of like this way because I can test as I go easier.

EDIT:

New patch is up, as promised.  The ending isn't perfect yet, and obviously some of the in-battle text is still missing, but it's mostly there.  And, after some epic hacking (well, epic for me at least), は is taken care of for the five cases that I know about (gaining experience, losing experience, enemy dropping an item (not tested), healing, and casting magic).  I can extend that to more cases pretty easily should more crop up.

Well. Last night, I had a huge post all typed up, and … my browser crashes for the first time.

So, I decided to get right in there and edit the dump myself. Wherever I haven’t made a misinterpretation (of contextual meaning or in-game use), the text should be … technically correct English, despite odd-sounding passive voice.

• Firstly, I employed a “proper” apostrophe (’). If such a character was not inserted into the ROM, it needs to be replaced by your standard apostrophe (') whenever it appears. Sorry about that.

• I was unable to translate entries 42eab (tell me where it appears), 42f65 (wrong kanji), 43039 (note corrected kanji).

• I had to guess when it came to 43227 and 43239, then 4325f and 43275. When are they used? And 43075 is too long, and … probably wrong. Vincent, does “ひかりくだける” mean anything to you?

• On the note of string lengths: my approximation was that the most characters the window would fit was 21. With that in mind, stat ups at level-up cannot be complete sentences. On the plus side, this means that I could use terms like “Defensive Might”, heh heh.

• On the note of stats! Since 力 / ちから is used for both physical and magical attacks, I thought that “Power” might be more appropriate than “Strength”. (You may have already done something about this — apparently I’m too lazy to download and apply the patch to check — and if so … I shut up now.)

• I did use that endgame save, which helped quite a bit. I spent about an hour trying to figure out why the Ohm Staff wasn’t working … turns out I was in the wrong chapter. I thought the “altar” meant Medeus’s throne or something!

I’d test this if I had the means, but it’s up to you. Hope things are finally starting to fall into place …

For ひかりくだける I think it's along the lines of "shines and breaks".

The Ohm Shard/Fragment item (which it's referring to) is supposed to vanish after being used. However the item itself is unused, so don't worry too much about the line XD

As for "Defensive Might", I think it's possibly a bit too literal. Perhaps just "Defense" would be fine.

From [start 4325f], it should be referring to the Again Staff, so perhaps replace "the functionality" with "movement" or something like that. I'm not sure if "movement" is not clear though- the staff is supposed to allow units to act again (like a mass dance/chant).

From [start 43227], it should be referring to the Watch Staff, so "reflected the sealed space" should be something like "revealed the sealed space" or "revealed hidden spaces".

Everything else looks fine, I think.

EDIT

The latest patch looks good. Amongst some minor bugs, I noticed that it didn't load Julian's Book 2 alternate ending (if Rena died).

The game calls it しゅびりょく here, though, whereas in the menu it’s just 守備. But you’re right, “Defence” is standard RPG fare. Still, though, there’s room in the text box for it.

Heh, see what a lack of context does? I should’ve come up with better phrasing, though. Not “functionality”, but “capacity to act” — and in this case “ability to move”.

Can 映し出す mean “reveal” in such a literal sense …? It makes perfect sense that way, so of course it does.

Hmm. RPGuy, can we insert opcodes for line breaks in strings? Because if not, that means that what I have now (“A strange, fantastic light / revealed sealed-off spaces!”) is too long. Replaced with something shorter (“A wondrous, odd light / revealed a passage!”) for the time being.

Question: can stats normally decrease at level-up? That’s when the 4303d string is used (I noticed after using cheats to raise stats).

Come to think of it, a few of those strings may be too long. Regardless, here it is again, thanks to Vincent’s insights. Say the word, and I’ll try to make everything fit within 21 character lines.

Edit: I went through it and tried to truncate everything so it would definitely fit within the game’s text boxes. It reads worse, but I guess this is borne of necessity. Both files are in the archive.

Let's see... I was kind of in a hurry, so I didn't put much thought into it. Looking around, perhaps "project (an image)" would be better?^^

映し出す can mean “to shed light on a situation”, so its revealing a mini-wormhole seems perfect.

I suppose I do have to give this redundant text-driven system credit for explaining how the Warp Staff works.

Aha, which reminds me — I’ve been meaning to ask, if that line about the Ohm’s Shards isn’t used when resurrecting a character, which string is? My kingdom for a save file in the right chapter. Even Google Images didn’t turn up a helpful screenshot.

On the subject of line lengths:
The one line stuff that shows up when action is going on (eg, "Marth's attack!") is limited to 26 characters.  And, remember, character/item names count as part of that and have an upper bound of 8 characters.
The text that shows up after the action has concluded (eg, "Marth got 10 EXP!") is limited to 20 characters.  Unfortunately, I don't seem to be able to write out newlines, or at least I can't write out newlines the same way that it's done everywhere else.  I'll see if I can figure anything out there.
