So is this going to be on a map or FE6-8 arena style? Something tells me the latter, but...

This is kind of old (the Famitsu scan is kind of new, but the info in the issue was revealed two weeks ago), but I guess many people don't know yet.
For the multiplayer (Wi-Fi or wireless), you build 5 character parties using characters from the 1 player mode (and apparently Rental characters as well, but I haven't heard about them again). You fight a second player (multiplayer is only two players apparently) on multiplayer-exclusive battle maps.
Also, from those screenshots, it's apparent that there's a time limit and possibly a turn limit.

I've noticed many of the English news kinda peoples are lagging behind in the info. IGN announced the game a little while ago with pics back from October--as if everything was big news

It's from a Japanese magazine, takes a while to reach the casual English internet user.

I like the way the multiplayer idea. It fits the game more than fighting to the death in an arena. I'd love to do a multiplayer that required you to think and not just pick and choose.

What difference would it make, really...it's still only 5 characters, everyone's just going to end up using their units as they would in the Link Arena, either that or whoever gets first shot wins. There's ultimately not too much of a difference in comparison. Everyone will either charge into each other and see who gets lucky enough to win or they will stalemate each other in the defensive terrain for all eternity.

Online multiplayer sounds lame. I was really hoping it wasn't going to end up as "your pimped out units vs their pimped out units".

I feel about the same way, actually. That's why the LA was so boring...

According to IGN, no Fire Emblem DS for us.. at least on this year; They don't even have it listed as TBA (And what an irony, 'Shrek Goes Fourth' game is listed there and the movie has not even been anounced).
Do you think we'll get it somewhere around May 2009?

IGN isn't Nintendo. Remember that. With a site as large as IGN its easy to find inconsistancies of games that don't exist and plain made up dats. Personally, I think if the US is to get it this year E3 will be the place where that is heared. I doubt it will be as late as May 2009. 9 months seems more like what you would expect from...Nintendo of Europe

February '09 sounds good, give or take one or two. Depends on when work starts I highly doubt you'll see it this year. The game comes out the latter part of the year.

And as some of us from Gamespot/GameFAQs say: (not meant to be offensive... Okay, maybe. :-P) You can't spell ignorant without IGN. Personally, as long as I get the game, I don't care how long I have to wait. On that note: are DS games region-locked? Or is that just Wii games? (As I'm told anyway; again, I don't spend enough time researching what I post...)

No; DS games are entirely region-free (well, as far as you need to know, just about ).

No. Just that as far as I know, the only game that is going to have problems with region may be Daigasso! Band Brothers DX, sadly. Because Nintendo is only allowing 100 commercial songs to be downloaded, users IDs which come with the cart are recorded--some people also think IPs are being filtered, but as this game is just full of mysteries (so far it's the game is the largest SRAM known, which is unsupported currently, save for a few rather brief, and almost rushed, firmware updates to run the thing).
So you have one game that might not be region-free :x
