At this point, you may be getting a little tired of all those commercials.  Y'know, Domino's sporting a Batman pizza box, some cellular company or another showing off a Batman 'phone, etc.  There's a lot of hype circulating about this movie, and that's before taking into account all the Ledgermania surrounding it.  You might find it all a little hard to believe.  Is the product equal to the hype, or this is another Spider-Man 3?  Well, I just got back from the theater, and here's my verdict:

Believe it.  This is the summer's best movie, IMO.

Thing is, it's already been a pretty good summer, at least from where I'm sitting.  Iron Man blew the doors off.  Incredible Hulk proved to be non-suck.  Hancock was a weak point, but it still had its moments.  Wall-E was a thing of beauty and depth.  Hellboy II stayed offbeat and funny while also providing one heck of a spectacle.  We've had a lot of superheroes ... plus one little robot.  So what's so different about this one?  Why's it the best?

Easy: The Dark Knight is not a superhero movie.  I agree completely with the reviewer who said that this one's a psychological thriller that just happens to feature guys in costumes and / or make-up.  It's a cerebral movie.  There's no shortage of action, certainly no shortage of scares, but you'll have a lot to think about, too,  and it doesn't hurt that all the actors are on their A-game.  True, Ledger's Joker – the Devil himself – is the highlight, but there's a lot of talent here, some of it understated, most of it pretty strong.

Really, I could go on and on about this, but take it from me: If you're only going to see one movie, this summer, see this one.  And do feel free to post your opinions here.  I'd love to hear what other folks took away from it.

The Dark Knight's apparently having a crazy take at the Box Offices. $18 million, I believe, crashing the record held by the last Star Wars movie.

I can't imagine it being that good since the first was merely alright in my opinion, but everyone seems to be loving it. I've heard nothing but positivity about the movie so far.

imdb gave it a 9.6/10 or something like that.

I really loved this movie, personally, and can't really say much; the Joker was hysterical and there were so many parts in the second half of the movie where I thought it would end.  Including the beginning of the second half
But it didn't end...  and where it did end, I thought it'd continue.

But definitely a good movie, and I agree Samu; the summer's finest.

Awesome movie with pro-explosion agenda. Really really really dark. The movie was so awesome that the film at the theater that I was in melted twice.

The Dark Knight is the best movie I've seen since...I don't know when, honestly. But it's hard to praise it without saying things that people already brought up. The psychological thriller feel, the motherfucking Joker, some really clever plots and traps...definitely one of the best two and a half hours I've spent in a while.

Dananananananana Nananananananana~

Awesome movie, I will admit, but I'm going to somewhat be the voice of dissent here... It's definitely a great movie, but not the best this year has had to offer thus far. As great as it was, to me it is held back for the same reason Samu and everyone else loved it: it's not a superhero movie. I also agree with what was put in Deadguy's spoiler tag... Though again, I'm not saying it's a bad movie, I still think it's awesome, I just don't think it's as great as everyone keeps saying it is.

It was indeed, a really nice movie. Worth the money and time. Nice plot and everything. The effects were really top notch; but the gadgets were like "people, you complain about Bond's 'irreal' gadgets but you have an erection with Batman's"

As for the best of the summer well, We have Wall-E, Mamma Mia!, and Wanted; which I'm still missing the last two, so I can't tell yet.

The reason people complained about Bond's gadgets is because they made up the entire content of some of the later movies.  Actually, gadget-wank and Pierce Brosnan getting laid was 90% of the content, all told.  When your movie is BUILT on deus ex machinas, you're going to hear complaints.  TDK isn't one of these, plenty of gadget-wank aside.

mr. ledger's performance was stunning and briliant. when they first announced him as the joker, to say i was doubtful would have been a bit of an understatement, but goodness did he ever pull it off.

that pencil vanishing act was the best part of the movie

mr. bale's performance, however, left much to be desired, imo. ...and i just couldn't get past that dreadful batman voice. it seemed like they spent so much energy and focus on making the joker so good, but completely forgot about batman and left bale to do his own, annoying, version.

but other than that, wonderful movie. completely worth the hype and all. one of those few where things aren't very predictable, which seem rather difficult for such a popular franchise where the demand for staying true to the story is pretty high.

You're going to need to shrink it.

You could shrink the dimensions of the gif or you could use a gif editor to chop some frames off.

It was a bit too long in my opinion but God was it a good movie.  I'd give it a 9.5/10.

And Ledger... Man. In a way, it's kind of good that he died when he did because I don't think he would have been able to top this.

Like I said in chat, I don't think Nicholson could be relied upon.  As Blacky Wacky pointed out, he's old for the role, and besides even that, he has a tendancy to play himself in costume.

Well, say what you want about Ledger as the Joker, and he did an incredible job as him, but he could only go as far as Nolan brothers could take him. He really could only say what they wanted him to. It is for this reason that I have no doubt that whoever they hire to replace Ledger, he will be more than good enough for the job.
