Phelps has been getting way too much press attention. Half of the 'news' stories in the New York Times this week have been Phelps, even during the height of the fighting in Ossetia.
Isn't this normal? This is a big sports event after all, with big achievements going on everywhere. Of course someone is going to take the spotlight in their country (and possibly elsewhere) if they get seven gold medals (it could turn to eight, who knows?), win by a small margin, and still break the records. If the Olympics weren't happening now, everything else would get more attention. Since the Olympics are happening now, it's getting the most coverage since it's considered the "biggest" event currently happening (and the fact all the participating countries want their gold medals). Of course, depending on who you are, this could be unfair, very unfair, or of no concern to you at all.
Imagine how much media coverage Phelps would get if he won, or lost his last run. Either way, it's still going to be a pretty big news story.
EDIT: Yay! Canada won bronze in the men's 1500m finals! (Actually, I thought Cochrane was going to get Silver, and Hackett Gold, but at least we got something).
EDIT2: Australia wins Gold in the women's 4X100 relay finals. Now it's time for the men's 4X100 relay final to come up (I wonder who's going to win?).
EDIT3: Well well, USA won gold in the men's 4X100 relay finals. To be honest, I thought they were going to lose to Australia once the second lap came, but they availed. Forgot to add, congratz to Phelps.
