I'm interesting in learning what the specifics are in how the Commando class works.

Things like: can they (he? only one?) only transform once per map? Is everything exactly the same as the transformee?

Anything else is fine.

Chainey becomes an exact copy of the other unit, except their current HP and maybe prf weapons. This lasts about 5 turns and gives 10 exp, while Chainey can gain levels as the copied unit at the same rate as the copied unit. This exp goes to level up Chainey's Commando state stats, which is a little useless because he can't actually fight anymore. There's also no limit to the transforming, making Chainey quite the valuable unit.

In the DS remake, the HP now duplicates as well (portrait too).  As well, I there was no option for me to turn back into regular Chainy once he changed over--so either after X amount of turns he reverts, or it's for the full chapter

In Monshou, he also duplicated the face sprite and he'll detransform after a set number of turns. I assume it's the same in Shin Ankoku.

In the remake, there seems to be a slight bug with him.  I had transformed him once, yet never entered any battles:  at the ending summary, it had said Chainy entered a generic 256 battles and won none of them.  An easy oversight, I'm sure, so hopefully, like the crit roll-over bug in Souen (FE9), it'll be patched up come localization

I can confirm Chainey copies all stats except EXP* (yes it copies level and any movement boosts) and does de-transform after about 5 turns.

The level up screen shows Chainey's portrait and I'm not sure whose growth it uses but it doesn't really matter as all Chainey needs now is HP and it hardly needs that (it just means less to heal up).

*-EXP as in EXP not WEXP...that is copied well it has to be seeing as Chainey can no longer use weapons

Thanks for the info, everyone.

Also, I noticed that he can't transform into either of the dragons. Could he do that before?

It could in FE1 (you'll see why I know hopefully in the not too distant future). Not sure about FE3 though.

Chainy transforms for about three turns, then reverts back at the beginning of your turn. Funny thing is, when he transforms into a unit with more life than whatever Chainy currently has, it doesn't increase (the max hp does, of course), so you can just stick a high-hp unit and have Chainy repeatedly transform so that a healer can keep healing for somewhat easy experience. ~_~
