I've heard that the Maniac Mode for this game is one of the most difficult in the entire series, and good old Nintendo/Intelligent Systems proves their disappointment dependability once again by blocking its release anywhere outside Japan. So, I ask, what are the easiest ways to obtain Maniac Mode, and is the challenge worth the effort of obtaining it? I play NetHack, so know that I value difficulty above all else.

Note that I have no plans of getting the US version and its annoying replacement for challenge known as "Easy Mode".

The reason they got rid of Maniac mode was they were acting on feedback of the Japanese players.

As for easiest more like only way of obtaining. You buy a Japanese verison of the game. I would normally use Play-Asia but they seem out of stock (usually for older goods it stays that way unless you use track it down). National Console Support still have it in stock though. The advantage of them is that the game is already in America meaning no "expensive" shipping.

Now getting the game to run. Buy yourself a gamecube (they're two a penny these days). Now buy a Action Replay or Freelaoder or a tri-wang screwdriver. The action replay or freeloader will act as a boost disc. Boot it up select freeloader then swap the disc. It's that simple. Remember to buy Gamecube versions of those...

Nintendo products are screwed shit with a non-standard screw. One that has three prongs as opposed to four. You have to use a special screwdriver to open it. I got the name wrong. They are known as Tri-wing or gamebit. Though looking at it Tri-Wing tends to be gameboy screws, while gamebit is used for the consoles. 4.5mm is the one you'll need.

Or...you can get the lid of a bic biro pen and melt it slightly with a desk lamp. Then inset the melted pen into the screw slot and wait for it to set. Its a bit crude though.

Once you've got the system open you need to acces a circuit board which requires taking practically everything else out...the funnest bit is putting it all back together

I can't seem to find any guides at the moment but its why most people go and use the boot disc method instead. Though these days it tends to be a bit costly as you'ld expect from niche gamecube discs

In the future there might be a Wii homebrew method of playing imported gamecube games but I would rather give answers that can be used in the present.
