Eh, I don't see any problems with it. For once I'm glad that I haven't gotten used to the Japanese version, so that I can't be bothered by any different names, .

It's probably because I wasn't prepared to see so much changes at once, and I did translate all of FE3 so...

Anyway, I'm hoping they don't change too many "i"s to "y"s, because it just looks silly to me. I mean, if I see "Lynda", I'm just going to...

I can understand it, though. I got all worked up when they changed Xyst/Jist to Gerik and whatnot. It must be the fact that these changes have absolutely no consequences for the pronounciation that is the most annoying. They probably want the names to sound more 'exotic', >_>

As long as they keep the storyline the same, they can change Villuck's name to Bob for all I care.

I also fail to see what's so bad about the online store... Pokemon Mystery Dungeon Time and Darkness have an online store as well, but it doesn't take away from they game, it just gives you more options. You can win the game without the stuff it offers just fine, and frankly, I don't think Random Strategy Player #325 is going to care that there's certain classes they can only get through the store. If anything they'll just think it's a cute extra.

Chris had huge problems with his playthrough due to the online store.

He couldn't class change his character because he had to wait like a few weeks until the online store stocked the master seals he needed to continue.

The exotic name spelling changes are bizarre, but they fit with the general naming style from the previous localizations.

The main problem will be how it's inconsistent with the Smash Bros. games, particularly "Caeda" vs. "Shiida".

Superbus also loves Falcoknights a ton. Your average player isn't going to really care that they can't get a class that is relatively comparable to the paladin class. As such, odds are they aren't going to wait around days before moving the story along just to get one like he did (in fact, I doubt too many will even use Caeda due to her lack of strength, regardless of her other uses).

Again, the stuff it offers is supposed to just be extra. Or perhaps even another element of strategy: rather than wait days for it to stock what you want, you complete the game with the stuff it offers one week and then next week you start a new playthrough and change your strategy around what items are now being stocked in the online store.

The Smash descriptions were never canon, so it's a non-issue.

When I saw Caeda I thought they were talking about Medea (and thinking, shes a princess?)...

It wasn't unitl Vincent ASM highlighted Talys that I realised the error of my ways...I'm not sure what it worse, NOEs poor romanisation with no love for the fandom or community or the fact NOA will change all the names becuase "Americans don't like exotic names like Caeda".

Anyway, try googling Caeda...it seems it might be a real name, I think I see how NOE is going, find something you can bearly romanise with and go with the real name because that is clearly what IS meant

Lets see Talys...possibly, now i'm not sure...the third result, yeah that one proves that my point...

The Smash descriptions were never canon, so it's a non-issue.
When it comes to Nintendo any translation (or fact) is not canon. Super Mario RPG with its "lets rename loads of established Mario enemies", Super Smash Bros Brawl with Pokey being now known as Porky (Pokey was misromanisation but I guess they are no longer afraid of Warner bros* plus there already is Pokey...the spiked enemy in the Mario universe) and then we have the Donkey Kong family relations (Diddys relatioin to DK, Crankys relations to DK...they seem to change on a game by game basis).
*-Porky Pig. I rest my case.

the Donkey Kong family tree was established by Rare, not Nintendo, so you can't really call that a "translation error" so to speak.

Also, minor name changes aren't a huge "Impact" on "Canon" for such an argument to be worthwhile, honestly. I'm more bothered here because I have an inkling most of the new Fire Emblem DS players will be a second wave of "Smash Bros. Migraters" (The first wave being for Rekka no Ken) and they could get confused due to, among other things, inconsistent name localization between games (Canon or not, Smash Bros. will likely help sell this. Going from "Shiida" to "Caeda" will raise more than a decent amount of eyebrows.)

On that note, I wonder how the fanbase will change with this dynamic - The FEDS players will be less likely to take the Support system for granted like the Rekka people were, I guess.

We'd have to alter the term!

Although I doubt many of the players of the original game will let the new names 'bother' them. We already have many members using the fan translated/original Japanese names for other games.

Wanna bet?

Just about every fandom for a Japanese series is going to have a group of people who stick to strictly the Japanese names (or just go with the ones they prefer... for example, some still refer to Gerik as Jist and Aran as Brad, but call the rest by their english names).

Actually, that's what I meant by that. They'll most likely continue to use the original names.

I just use the English names, unless I'm talking about the Japanese version for some odd reason >_>

To be honest, most names don't bother me, but it seems like Nintendo has a very bad habit of altering names just because they can. Nyna? What's next, Rinda? And we ALL know, in regards to FE6, of my fight over Tate vs. Thite vs. Thito vs. Tit vs. Whatthefuckever.

This takes me back to my comments about the decision to name the Dragon Knight in Sacred Stones "Cormag", when his name used to be Cougar: "Why would you want to change a dragon knight's name from Cougar? A cougar is a giant cat that kills things! What the fuck is a Cormag!?"

I can deal with a few, but so far I can't think of anything that they haven't changed other than Marth...

Caeda is a pretty odd change, considering how major a character she is. I'd hate to see this turn out like Days of Ruin, with it's alternate translations for PAL regions, but I almost want it to now.

Actually, now that I think about it, they might be deliberately avoiding fan translations. Unlikely considering Nintendo's habit of ignoring it's own fans, but still possible.

Eh, the changes don't really bother me that much. Nyna, Talys, it's all the same to me. Although "Caeda" kind of strikes me as odd. Does anyone know how to properly pronounce that? I've been pronouncing it "seed-uh", which if correct isn't that far from Sheeda.

Wait a minute... that's what Caeda is? That's what Sheeda's new name is!? Are they DAFT!?

Nintendo drives me absolutely BATSHIT with this crap! "OK, America and Europe have had the same names since 1990 for these people... let's throw those assholes a curveball! That'll fuckin' teach them to translate our shit!"

Absolutely infuriating.
