A friend of mine is currently attempting to play Fire Emblem on his PowerBook using the Mac build of VBA.  Unfortunately, for no reason we can discern, it's very choppy, even with the framerate set to auto.  Any idea why, or what we could do to fix it?

What kind of Mac is it? I use a PPC G4 and it works perfectly fine, unless it's Golden Sun 2 or some other high requirement game. In general, the Mac version is less efficient than the PC version.

Possible solution: Set the frameskip to five, the auto is kinda dumb. If it's the computer not keeping up with it, don't increase the screen size, turn audio to a low quality or off and no video filters.

Also, a bit of a warning, certain versions of the Mac VBA crash on the map (chapter intro and SS overworld).

I have a Titanium G4 (around 1 Ghz) and it works fine on auto. Just note you can't see beginning map screen in FE6 or swap units around, because it crashes.

Try older versions of the emulator.

I found on an old PC here that the newer Visual Boy Advance got the slower it got and the likely cause is an overloading of features that don't help the end user but slow the whole thing down.

Post 1.3.1 (and maybe before that) there are very few compatability gains (NES classics, give a shit? Pokemon Clock again give a shit?).

1.3.1 crashed and 1.4 was zetta choppy, but 1.5.1 works almost perfectly.  Thanks!
