I'd say that the battle scenes in PoR and RD were w a y... t o o... s l o w... Particularly if they involved Armor Knights. I'd say that's an example of graphics getting in the way of gameplay.
You think they're slow in PoR and RD? Try Monshou.

The armor knights in FEDS are actually pretty cool.  They have a very natural, nonchalant way of fighting while actually moving like human beings.  They also don't have to move more than two/three steps, so they're much more tolerable as well.  Generals have a lance so long that they can just attack from across the screen (it sort of slides in the grip to do so).

Actually, just change the battle settings so that it stops displaying those messages between attacks.  Monshou then becomes much faster.  Of course, no animation is the best as the map animations are pretty cool in that game.

I found the option to turn battle animations off in RD very useful. At first it went way too fast for me so I didn't have an idea what was going on, but after having played through the game a few times I prefer to turn them off. It almost makes the game move fast.

FEDS moves very quickly, so no complaints there. I never turn the animations off, since you can just tap on the screen to end them when you don't want to see it. This way, I can just see boss/important battles without having to switch the settings all the time.

You know what, most of my post was in general. The only part about FEDS that bugs me is the battle scenes. I myself find them incredibly obnoxious. You can have your own opinion. However, seeing as all FE games have good storylines and controls/gameplay, so really the only things left for differences in quality are difficulty and length (not to big of issues, though) and then how visually pleasing it is. In my opinion, the GBA and before were more visually pleasing than PoR and RD, and FEDS's battle sprites (if that's what you want to call them) are quite annoying, as well as the map sprites. Because of that, it definitely comes across as the worst in my opinion. That doesn't mean that it's a terrible game, but it does mean that I'm not going to be upset at a later release date. Think what you want, but this is my simple view of the game, and so little is going to change it. Oh yeah, here's one more downside. Marth has pants in it!

That's a downside?

I have to admit though, the General looks like a toy.

EDIT: Which is bad...

What, you expect armors to be running around in DBZ-levels of speed during combat?

I can understand animations can be slow at times, but sometimes they're like that for a reason.
To be honest, I really wouldn't mind if armors ran around/moved faster because a lot of dudes are already doing unrealistic stuff anyway. Though it would seem unfitting, there's still ways to make them seem slow without actually compromising speed by a large amount...

The last part was just a joke referring to how he wore a "Man Skirt" as some would call it in the original. I honestly don't care.

They already improved the Armor animations in FEDS.

Also, every character's animation is more realistic now, even the Hero & Swordmaster.  THe Armor Knights definitely fit in more with the crowd now.

Pre-orders open people.
http://www.game.co.uk/DS/RolePlaying/~r338452/Fire-Emblem/?recommended=SEARCH
Remember if you spend over £30 use the code NW10GME09 NW11GMEHW to save £3. As is strands FEDS+US deliver is smidge under £30 (£29.94 or something). Something like the DVD gift wrap will sort that out. If you want to do something more unusal you could buy Freshly Picked Tingle's Rosey Rupeeland (remember this bizarre game will never come to America) for £9.99.

Just check GAME will hold an order back untilt he whole is ready before doing that though (you don't want to pay shipping twice once on DVD gift wrap and once of FE)
