"We are looking to monetize Battle.Net so that we get to keep making these games and updating features," Cool. Well, it looks like I won't be monetizing Blizzard's game, then. Remember, this shit started happening after Activision took it over. And Activision is SERIOUSLY going to "monetize" the new Call of Duty game.

Never mind the game is announced years too late for me to still care about playing Starcraft, I'm not thrilled it's pretty much pulling .hack on us. Way to milk the consumer for every dime possible, jackholes.

It looks like I won't be buying Diablo III, or Starcraft II after all. I was looking forward to the multiplayer aspect of the games, but I guess that is void now. Three parts? And each one will feel like a "full" game? Oh dear oh dear, I hope I'm not dead by then.

I didn't think I was going to buy Starcraft 2 anyway. Now I know I'm not. Well played Activision/Blizzard, well played.

We operate a large kitten farm in Texas, providing thousands of domestic felines for release into urban areas each month. We rely on the freshness of Tuscan Milk, as our kittens will not drink anything less. During the Italian milk drought of '03 we lost hundreds of puss, because the kittens refused to drink anything but Tuscan Whole. Thankfully Tuscan also produces their Fresh Powdered line, which is canned at the teats of elderly bovine. Thanks to the Italians, Texas streets will always have plenty of healthy long-haired puss for stroking. A+++ Will do business again!!!

The Starcraft II thing is... a shame. I appreciate the fact that Blizzard is trying to create a complete storyline for each campaign without needless cutting, but that's still crazy even to charge expansion prices for the completion of the storyline. As for Battle.net, I'm at least slightly relieved that the "monetizing" is only going to be for extra stuff that most people won't readily be using. Source: Starcraft II trilogy - Interview with VP Rob PardoSource: Battle.net "monetizing" - Interview with Rob PardoEDIT - Of course, this could all be a bunch of bull from a higher-up who wants to look nice to the customers... But, I'm not that pessimistic.

Monetizing Battle.net sounds like total crap, even if its just for name changes. What the fuck happened to unlimited free accounts and being able to use any server?
The trilogy thing though is a little different. As long as they charge expansion pack prices and add multiplayer content and new units, I don't think I mind. Starcraft had Brood War after all. If they want me to cough up 50 bucks though each time... what the fuck. Of course, there could also be bullshit like them milking Starcraft 2 with expansions like the Sims was.
If they're serious though about charging full game prices though, then these games better be the next sliced bread.

I'm thinking they mean something more like a character's in-game name, not changing account names. Or even "transferring" a character from one "account" to another one for consolidation. Though, given that Battle.net is changing, that could be different a year from now. As for the expansion price thing, as it is some expansion packs have full game pricetags. And, knowing Blizzard, that seems like a trend that would stay that way for the trilogy. Now, if they end up being "budget" priced, that's significantly better, but given the amount of time that will likely fall between when the campaigns are all released, I doubt a truly "budget" price release will happen.

Am I the only one who is still looking forward to StarCraft II?
The Terran campaign still looks awesome to me, and while I don't know nearly as much about the Zerg and Protoss campaigns, I will trust them to make them great until they betray that trust.
Clearly it was a choice of either (a) Terrans in 2010, Zerg in 2011, Protoss in 2012, or (b) all three in 2012. And while there may well be a substantial number of us willing to wait another 4 or 5 years for the inevitable Battle Chest, I'd say quite a few of us aren't.
Note that I just made up those numbers in the above paragraph, but I challenge anybody to come up with a better prediction.

You people are insane.
Blizzard is making three full games of content? And you're bitching? It's like D2 and D2:LoD, only you can play whichever one you want without having to buy the others.
I'm pretty damn certain none of you are going to be leet ladder gamers in multiplayer, so why the fuck's it even an issue? Anybody who's going to buy one for multiplayer--that is, anybody worth a damn at the game to the point where multiplayer would not be an endless succession of assrapings--was already going to buy the other two.
I mean, fuck, you people bought FE7 and FE8, two basically-fucking-identical games that are guaranteed to be nowhere as good in their respective genre as SC2 will be in its, and you have the temerity to complain about Blizzard doing this? Christ. Quit yer bitching.

That's assuming there actually is three full games of content. If there isn't there's a very good reason to be pissed off that can only be (slightly) remedied by not making you have to buy them all to use all three races online. Which also assumes the map editor and the ability to host custom maps isn't for paying members only, either...

Seeing as we don't even know what the "monetization" will consist of, I'm not really sure how anyone can have a "beef" with it at this point. Pardo says that it's going to be for some form of optional services that won't be required for the regular experience. While that still might be nickel and diming the users, he does have a point in that it takes them some work to do those things when they aren't a regular part of the game. As such, I can partially sympathize with Blizzard on charging slight fees to do those services. (And, you can't even attribute that to Activision, as they've been doing it in World of Warcraft since before the merger.)

Oh, please, use your brains. Blizzard knew what worked last time. If they try anything like this, expect the bnetd debacle (debacle for Blizzard, not the bnetd people) to pale in comparison. As for "only one race in multiplayer!!!!11"--you seriously cannot believe that Blizzard would be so retarded as to make Terran v. Terran the only possible game type until the next game is released. I refuse to believe that anyone would be so apocalyptically dumb.

It's possible, that's all I'm saying. And it shouldn't take an entire year to come out with the next races campaign if they were already functional enough to put into the first game.
Besides. Although there was more than one race in each installment, the Dawn of War games had you buy certain expansions to get certain races playable online as well. Blizzard could see that as a way to get people to buy all three installments instead of getting just one, then playing nothing but online battles.
