On escape chapters, everyone neds to escape in order to keep them later, if I remember correctly. Since only Leaf escaped, everyone else is gone. I think lost characters can be retrieved in a very late chapter, however. (or is that only captured units?)

You could always start over.

Or you could use this opportunity to test your FE skills and clear it with just Leaf. Though, Chapters 5 and 6 aren't exactly very easy even with assistance.

Shirona: All left behind units are considered captured and can be rescued in 21x normally.

I do this wrong every single time I play the game. (Which has been twice so far, but o well.) Luckily I also save in a different slot before the end of a chapter, just in case. That way I'll always have a few chapters worth of backup, in case anything goes wrong or I missed someone/something important.

That's a shame though, since it really makes the fighters a whole lot more useful in the earlygame.

Of course, I never mind restarting a game whenever I'm around chapter 5 or so. Although FE9 might be a different case for me, since I really hate that earlygame, but that's a different topic altogether.

Although you can get any captured characters back, they will all be completely useless, unless they were captured in the last few chapters or were extremely overleveled.

As for not losing to all the Armours: Block the hallway with Leaf, Fergus or Brighton. They have the defence to take more than one hit. Leaf can also take out the Mages with the Light Sword and can recruit a character too (assuming you met the condition for it in Chapter 3). Before you open the door, hang around a bit to get extra Vulneraries from the Soldier reinforcements. The reinforcements are pretty fucking random, so be on your guard when releasing the prisoners (if they all survive and escape you get Chapter 4x, complete with another similar situation of being camped by a bunch of Armours and Mages, but also a powerful recruitable Mage with Grafcalibur, the Sety Scroll and a Hero Sword  ).

Oh, and in Chapter 3, give as many swords as you can (3-5 Iron/Steel/Short/XL Swords maybe), as well as the Armourslayer, Hezul Scroll and a bunch of Vulneraries. The Fire Sword doesn't hurt either, but the only person who I think can use it then is Leaf, who has he the Light Sword. And the Lockpick. Don't forget the Lockpick.

To expand on this, give them all to Leaf and Rifis by chapter 3's end.

Felgus can use it after approximately 10 battles. He makes chapter 5 much easier with that sword and his support bnous with Karin. 85+ countercrit and ranged attack helps speed things up a lot.
