2. gonzalez - he dcouldnt hit any of the swordsmen and got carved up like a big ugly side of beef

Why are you trying to hit swordsmen with an axe-user? Unless you were counting on a critical or something...

Also, you could make a wall of your highest dodge units, supported from behind with a healer or something.

Or just lure him to a 1-space bottleneck and use Lalum/Elphin to block the doorway since he won't attack them.
