This is just a topic I produced because, well, I just wanna know the opinions of people on FE8 and how people premote them. This doesn't have to go for all the promoted classes for FE8, just the ones you want to point out. Paladin: I never really use them too much, but when I do, Seth gets me on the go. Great Knight: Kyle. His speed and skill usually comes in useful for using axes. General: Amelia. I can't see why anyone would choose Gilliam over her, other than the fact that Amelia is hard to train. Hero: Gerik. He was pretty much made to be one, I think. Ranger: Neimi. I already have a sniper, and I want a ranger. Neimi is my only choice. She's quite awesome. Sniper: Innes. He already is one, and he's not really THAT bad, is he? Warrior: Garcia. I just do, it's not really a matter of how good he is. Berserker: Ross. He's just a beast. I abused him on Ch. 3 and got him to be a pirate by Ch. 4 Bishop: Artur. Gah, he's amazing. Sage: Moulder. Never really used him much. Valkyrie: Natasha. I just do, I don't like her too much. Mage Knight: L'Rachael. Eh, magic and speed is a great combo with anima magic. Summoner: Knoll. I already have Ewan for the Druid, so I just leave Knoll with summoner. Druid: Ewan. SOOPER PWN!! FalcoKnight: Vanessa. She's pretty great. Wyvern Lord: Cormag. I chose that after 5 playthroughs with him. Wyvern Knight: Tana. Holy crap, that stregnth is amazing.

I'm not going to go through the entire list of classes, but when I promote my characters, I like to go with the class that has more movement. The enemies aren't too powerful in this game, so I prefer to blitz them with high-move characters rather than focus on higher stats.

So for the ones with promotion branches... Franz, Forde, Kyle, and Amelia usually all become Paladins because I like movement, and I rarely use Paladins for axes anyway. The only time I really use Paladins for Lances is when Jeigans give up their Swords to other units, and the only time I use Paladins for Axes is Isadora in the Genesis chapter and in Cog of Destiny Eliwood mode. Gilliam becomes a General, though I don't use him much... I like the critical animation better than for Great Knights Neimi becomes a Forest Knight because of higher mobility save in the desert chapter and for the option of Swords Moulder becomes a Sage, usually, because I like Anima magic, and it's odd seeing a Bishop in brown Vanessa and Tana become FalcoKnights to Triangle with Syrene... and I'm less comfortable turning an existing animal into something else.. I didn't really mind horses coming out of nowhere, but... Cougar becomes a Wyvern Knight for Pierce, superfluous as it is Colm becomes a Rogue, though technically it's fine turning him into an Assassin Joshua and Marica usually take Swordmaster; I've tried both as Assassin's Garcia becomes a Warrior because he can't use the Hero caps Jist becomes Hero because he can make better use of axes than bows Ross becomes a Berserker because the critical bonus nullifies bad Skill Ewan becomes a Druid because he's the only Dark magic user aside from Knoll and his summons aren't as good Knoll becomes a Summoner the rare chance I use him Lute, Lachelle, Natasha, Arthre go either way. Lachelle's stats are identical either way and I like both Valkyrie and Mage Knight. Lute is better as a Sage, but she still kicks ass as a Mage Knight. I hate Natasha, but... Valkyrie's a solid class, and Bishop's got Slayer. Arthre looks great as a Sage (which is solid as ever), but Bishop has Slayer.

It depends on the playthrough. I really have no preference for any character, although I suppose I tend to turn Ewan into a Sage more often (because I love sages) and I turn the pegasus knights into wyvern knights most of the time. I guess that's for the extra CON, and I like the way they look.

I really like Falcoknights, Mage Knights, and Generals, so I promote my characters into those whenever I get the chance. Otherwise, I'm in Musashi's boat and promote into whichever has higher movement. I prefer Wyvern Lord over Wyvern Knight, though.
Note about promoting Pegasus Knights to Wyvern Knights: What about the poor Pegasus ;__________;

Who cares about winged ponies. Deadly flying snakes is what it's about
I've never been much of a fan of pegasus knights. Not in terms of characters, stats or class as a whole. The only pegasus knight that I like is Marcia. I just think she talks hilariously. All the other pegasus knight characters range from extremely annoying to plain boring on my interest-o-meter.
Although I suppose Farina is okay too.

Let's see...
-Ewan goes Sage because I can use the dark magic glitch to give him control over the whole magic triangle and staves. -Gilliam and Amelia go General to control the whole weapon triangle. My alternative choice for Amelia is turning her into a Paladin. -Ross goes into Berserker because of critical bonus. -Garcia into Warrior because I want to have at least one of them (plus, spinning criticals for the win). -Knoll into Summoner for the obvious summoning ability. -Tana and Vanessa into Wyvern Knights because I'm not a big fan of Falcoknights, and I never really found the need to use the Triangle Attack. -Natasha, Artur, and Moulder into Bishop to make them own enemies even more with Slayer. -The cavaliers turn into Paladins for more movement and to not get raped by armour-slaying weapons. -Lute into Sage. See Ewan, although her tiny CON cannot handle dark magic. -L'Arachel into Valkyrie because I feel like having one. -Colm into Assassin because I feel like having one. I have Rennac for my thieving needs. -Joshua and Marisa into Swordmasters for critical boost. -Neimi into Ranger because of higher movement and swords. -Gerik into Hero because...he's meant to be one.

Oh, I forgot these guys too.
Assassin: Colm. I hate rogues. Just hate em. Rogue: I stick with Rennac, the rare chance i use him. Swordmaster: Joshua. I don't see why anyone would choose him being an assassin.

Joshua's got good stats, right? Someone may want an assassin with stats like those. Gerik is good as either class. I made him a ranger only because they have better caps than heroes and more movement. Gerik is just fine using only swords, so for me his promotion doesn't make a difference (with those heavy blades and his high CON)

im in the middle of my second playthrough but heres what i think. gilliam - general , cuz i love watching the enemies weapons clink against thier armor, deusell can be my great knight vanessa - may be my falcon knight, i tend to use air units mainly for reconisance though ross- fighter, berzerkers are one of my favorites, but i like dolza for that neimi - sniper , even though ranger is more useful i like snipers more colm - already an assassin, rennac will be my rogue lute - sage, am i the only one who seems to prefer infantry to mounted units natasha - bishop , shes the best bishop , sorry mulder joshua - swordmaster, i tend to like myrmidions more though , for thier sprite ford, kyle - i like these cavaliers the best , but i dunno thany - wyvern knight , ive yet to try one amelia - general , if i bother to train her, i wouldnt mind having 2 walls gerik - born to be a hero, although maybe i will try ranger, i didnt realize he could be one marisa - maybe assasin , ill have to see which sprite i like la'archel - mage knight , mage knight just sounds cool ewan , knoll - ive heard knoll is the better summoner, but druids are baddass, so i dunno. ill probably make the kid a summoner cormag - wyvern lord, i bet he will be annoyingly strong
the characters i didnt mention are my benchwarmers lol

Do I have to mention the fact that you don't want to go overboard with the prepromotes? prepromotes are so much broken into favor in Sacred Stones, but that doesn't mean that you should use almost all of them. I like to think of Prepromotes as benchwarmers; I never use them unless for pawn-related reasons for weak units, or making a job much easier to do(take Rennac), and I like to make my team look big. Most prepromotes are pawns. The only ones I actually repetitively use are Seth and Innes because they both start with level one with solid bases and growths.

FE5 taught me to appreciate the prepromote.
Dozla is irredeemable. Regular enemies with regular weapons can critical him, which isn't abnormal in most Fire Emblems, but this is The Sacred Stones where enemies are punching bags in disguise.
Knoll's stats are so bad, he may as well be a prepromote too.

well, my favorite Promoted Units are the Sages, then goes the Druid and The Swordmasters, these are my favorite promotion:
Lute: Sage, is the better Sage in FE8 Joshua: Swordmaster, with an A Soupport with Gerik have a great Critical% Ewan: Druid, is slow with the dark magic, but with somes Body Ring and Speed Wings is good Neimi: Ranger, is better than a Snniper and can use Swords Moulder, Natasha: Bishop, are goods units fighting with mosters L'Arachel: Both promotions are good, I liked her like a Valkyrie Gerik: Hero, I think he is the best Hero in this Game, and with A Soupport with Joshua is better Ross: Hero-Journeyman Niv3, in both promotions is good, just change the Sword or the 15%Crit Tana: Wyvern Knight, is better than a Falco Knight Vanessa: Falco Knight, is good as a Falco Knight and can use Sword Colm: Assasin, is good as "Professional Thief" but that job is for Rennac Cormag: Wyvern Lord, is very, very, very good as that promotion
