I made a brief post earlier in this thread. However, the post was rather terse and hurried, and while this one will likely be terse and hurried as well, I figured that, for the impact that it's had on me, FESS deserves more than three paragraphs.
I joined FESS on October 28, 2005. I was in eighth grade, and it was my brother's birthday (don't ask me why I joined a forum on my brother's birthday; I honestly have no idea). Almost immediately, I liked the intelligence I saw here, and wanted to become a member of the community. I soon began posting frequently, especially in the FE forums, where I mostly offered advice on FE7. By the time I had made my way to this forum, I had already been at another forum in 4th grade (you could say I was rather intelligent then; I taught myself to type and located an internet forum that I joined which was, in its glory days, quite the excellent forum. It certainly left its mark on me). I considered myself intelligent by this time, and fairly well-versed in forum politics and etiquette. I could type well. I had already had a certain measure of judgment, and it was fairly strong by this point; I knew what to say, and what to avoid. Consequently, I soon became rather well known in certain corners of what was a bustling community.
After some time around here, I joined #FESSChat. I had already been an IRC user in the past, so it wasn't a new concept to me. I must say that, of all the decisions I made at FESS, joining FESSChat was the best one. Through FESSChat, I soon found the FEWC chat and fessrp, both of which soon became my favorite IRC channels. Through these channels, I grew to know a number of people who I have become quite good friends with today, and will hopefully remain good friends with in the future.
Anyway, I spent a while at FESS. Eventually, it passed what I considered its "golden age" and people started drifting away. While some of these members had specific gripes against other members (a few members I knew disliked Cyas and Jet intensely, and consequently refused to visit FESS or FESSChat, so I talked to them in another chat), most of them simply grew up and become more and more busy as their lives became more complicated. While I would see some of them from time to time, most of them have since drifted out of my life. Perhaps it's for the better, because maybe they're happier now. Regardless, I'm glad to have met them, because many of them taught me something about life indirectly - and those that didn't simply were good company.
After a while, I was vetted. By this time, I rarely visited the forums, and although I had made some contributions (the FE9 support conversation thread comes to mind), I was not a terribly active member. Nevertheless, I was honored to be vetted.
I regret that I didn't spend as much time here as I would have liked. Once I started freshman year, my activity dropped significantly. While this was probably for the best - I had lots of homework, and it would have likely been hard to complete on mIRC - I still regret all the time that I missed here. As a result of this period of inactivity, I feel that I have become detached from many of the members here. I also missed the chance to say goodbye as a number of my friends from the "old days" faded away. It's really too bad, because I would have liked to have gotten contacts with them. At the same time, I believe that I will not lose anything by losing touch with those who have left; I will remember the time that I spent with them fondly, and I can only hope that I have had some positive impact on their lives.
I must say, however, that I never regretted joining this site. Sometimes I regretted involving myself in the drama surrounding the site -that could get irritating - but as far as the actual joining? Not at all. I don't consider time here wasted. I consider it time well-spent, for the most part. The RPG forum here has helped me develop as a writer. Crazed Machinations was one of the best RPGs that I've ever been in. I'm thrilled to have been a part of it. And, hell, my time on IRC was tons of fun. I recall days in the summer where I stayed up as late as 3 AM because I was having so much fun just talking to folks on IRC. They are times that I will remember fondly - and I hope that I will be able to have a number of more meaningful IRC conversations in the future as well. I'll still be there; you can probably count on that. XD
Now, this post is probably quite disjointed and is probably rambling quite a bit. I know that I'll look back on this tomorrow and think of something else that I wanted to include, but for now I'm just going to write it. So, I'm going to move onto my shout-out section because, hell, there's some people who deserve them quite a bit. These don't go in any particular order; they're basically just whoever I'm thinking of at the second that I write this. XD
Mow Mow: Man, I've talked with you a lot over the years. XD You were in FEWC for a while before the server switch, and I still talk to you regularly in fessrp. Honestly, I'm glad that I've met you. You're a better artist than you give yourself credit for as well - and you're also a fun person to RP with as well. I've had a lot of fun hanging out on IRC with you over the past years. I know that you'll still be in there in the future, so it's not so much a goodbye as a dedication. ;]
MK404: If it wasn't for FEWC, I doubt that I would have stayed at FESS for as long as I did. Although I was never terribly involved in the RP itself, (I regret that; it lists high on the list of FESSRegrets), the chat truly introduced me to a bunch of new people. Had it not been for the chat, I would have never met you, Vince, Yuri, LG, Mow, Misk, Togie, CO, ido, and a number of others - at least, I wouldn't have known any of you as well as I do now. Let me add to that that you are an awesome person. You're an excellent spriter and artist, and you're just a fun person to talk to in general.
Lord Glenn: We've talked a lot over the years, mainly through FEWC, and I'd like to say that I've gotten to know you pretty well too. I actually had forgotten all about scripting until I saw your scripts, and then I took it upon myself to learn more about it. Heck, I may have never developed Flavio without you. It was an honor to be vetted with you~
Yuri: Man, it was so much fun talking to you back when you were in IRC. I really miss the days that I would have discussions with you - I remember we had a very involved one on whether addictions could actually occur. It's too bad that we don't get to talk much. Hopefully that'll change somehow in the future.
Vince: I've only gotten to know you well recently, but I have a lot of fun talking to you once a conversation gets started. XD If it wasn't for you, I may have never been introduced to some awesome video game themes, and some awesome books. Glad that I know you. XD
Miskantdhur: I first got to know you as a spriter who designed my signature. We then got to know each other through the RPG board, and though you seemed rather blunt at first, you've probably become one of my better internet friends. I talk with you about all sorts of things these days - college essays, Brave New World, philosophy, video games... fairly endless, really. It's a lot of fun. XD
I'm running out of time; forum closes in about three minutes, I believe, and I want to get this in, but here are the names of the other people I intended to shout out to: Darkslime, Phlogistic, Seti, idoaltima, Togieduo, CO Raptor, Fox, Sword Saint, Cheesecake Mage, Willfor, bork, and tons of other people I'm forgetting. I'm glad that I've come here, because I've met so many of you. We'll keep in touch, I hope.
