Just to see where it goes, I've went ahead and updated the list of Fire Emblem forums. We now have a board for New Monshou (or as it's officially called: Fire Emblem: Shin Monshou no Nazo - Hikari to Kage no Eiyu, translated as Fire Emblem: New Mystery of the Emblem - Heroes of Shadow and Light).

We should get a "like" button as in facebook, so as to give our "liking" without posting. Just saying- it might be fun :X

Granted, I don't think much will come of this. All of the real FE discussion is on SF, as it really should be.

But then again? Maybe it'll be nice to talk about the damn game without having 20 angry teenage shut-ins tearing you apart. If I disagree with someone there, I'm "trolling". If I mention my credentials (played FE for a long time, write professionally, fucking ran FESS), I'm a loser. I can't talk about anything there without getting into an argument with some dorks who beat the game on Lunatic/Classic without losing a person within a week of the ROM coming out and crunched numbers in spreadsheets.

You seriously made me laugh hahaha

Well, look at the bright side, the fact that we all gathered so quickly and posted so much reflects that we have, somehow,
surpassed FE. I guess we could continue like this, having FE just as a symbol. It's as if FESS over-expanded, and now we are
back at square one after the "explosion", but with all the good stuff that happened in between.

In other words, is FE so important now? I doubt many people that just came back decided to do so because of FE :X

Exactly the reason why I didn't even try to go there.

I take this as a super good sign that FESS won't be shut down again for a while. :'D If only for the sake of nostalgia and meeting people from the good ol' times.

That's part of the reason why I was so giddy when you said FESS was back, albeit, only "back" in a very old way.  FESS moved a lot and progressed as it aged through it's, what, five versions?  Something like that.  Once the IRC chat started really moving, the members of FESS had become something else, a lot more personal and conversational--but FESS has always been about that.  Sure, there's Fire Emblem, and in the end, that's where we came from.  If memory serves, Captainzai and Terranigma Freak wanted a place that wasn't basically GameFAQs.  That meant a lot.  And I only remember the good stuff.

Towards the end, FESS really nosedived from heading into a far-off personal place, to the point where, it's kinda like The Ashtray.  Random people just hanging out that already know each other.  This happens to a lot of places, and in the end, it's just as dead as if the place closed down anyways.

I don't really care what this FESS is going to be, but it's not sounding like it did right before it died, and that's nice so far.  And it's definitely not whatever the fuck the FE fandom shit itself into, as 'Bus so put it.

Even if it's only up for giggles at the moment, I'm happy, so thanks to all that be that inadvertently caused FESS to open its shiny gates again.  And now I'll randomly just watch and enjoy the conversation, and whatnot.

I'm just glad to see people posting and having discussions again. Back in the ol days, i'd come here for some Fe data sure, but 90% of my time was just chatting and cracking jokes, having a laugh or two.

I want to tell everyone that's going "OMG yay FESS is back~"... don't get your hopes too far up.

Remember that this was something I did spur of the moment, mainly because of something Popo said. I had intended for it to be only a few days. As of right now, that's still the intention. I don't expect us to really go anywhere because of one simple fact: we're not really a Fire Emblem community anymore. I'm shocked that we've gotten this far, this fast, but we will probably never be the big-time Fire Emblem community that we used to be. SF gets most of the news and has the stronger member flow, specifically because of that. It's nice that people have come back, but do we really want to be just a theoretical circle-jerk of friends?

That, and I'm sure that things will taper off more than they already have. Eventually, it will be just like the Ashtray: a few guys bullshitting about whatever. In the same way that Ashtray is Blacky Wacky and the Blackettes, this would be Bus and the Busketeers. I closed FESS in '08 to avoid that.

So I guess the question is... what DO the members want? Are they cool with this being temporary? Do they really want FESS to come back? What FESS do they want to come back? As it is, I'd have the same choices I had in '08... with no staff (I'd probably be it, and maybe one or two lieutenants), less time (remember, I write professionally, there's only so much time for video games and the rest of the industry), and a memberbase that's entering or finishing college.

The shocking response to this has me at least teasing keeping the place open. But I'd need a hell of a kick in the pants to keep something open that I closed for good reason.

EDIT: It's also important to remember that Vincent and the boys at SF have the monopoly on FE data as it is. Anything I would be able to do would likely be piggybacking off of them. If anyone has ideas on how to change that, or how to present it differently, I'm all ears. But as it stands, I'd be entering a competition with Vincent, and I've never desired outright competition... especially if I'd be losing.

I mainly popped back for the nostalgia and because a large number of people I haven't talked to since we migrated had shown back up. Unless the outcry is vehement, I think FESS only being temporarily open is for the best.

EDIT - I would suggest that people make sure that their contact info is up to date in the Contact thread in General, in the event that you want to be able to be contacted by people that may have popped back up.

I'd really like to say "let's keep this going and try to recapture the glory of the old days", but I doubt that's feasible. Keeping this temporary is probably for the best, although I'd love it if someone could prove me wrong.

I really enjoyed revisiting FESS after two years. If possible, it would be nice if we could do this a little more often (like once every few months or something like that).

This actually sounds nice. At the very least we should make a "once a year reunion"- might solve the cons of reopening for good and closing forever.

Dunno, every 6 moons or some shit .  Won't matter anyways, we gather faster than the power rangers .
No, but seriously, this was nice

I don't think I can really add anything to what Bus, Glenn and Musashi already said, and I agree with them completely.

What I can do is explain why the fuck I'm here and what do I expect, so whatever decision does Bus take is just a little more informed.

I think it's fairly obvious most of us are not back because of FE. Many still play it, but most don't, and from what I've read in this two days, most didn't even try the new game. Add to that the aforementioned fact that SF is the biggest FE site and you already got your answer regarding the relation between FESS and the game it's named after.
I came back for nostalgia and just to check how people was doing. I was never one of the most active members nor one of the most influentials, as I lurked a lot. But after 4 years or so of being in the forum, I did get the feeling that I knew many of you, or at least some aspects of your life. I even managed to keep in touch with a handfull of you, and some have becomed friends I care a lot about. I even met Gab in real life, something that takes courage (just check his posts ).
It's nice to have FESS up and running and see everyone again, but I really think it won't last, at least not as it's meant to: a THE forum about Fire Emblem.

So, basically, I rather this be temporary than let FESS become an Ashtray (the Ashtray's still there for anyone that cares).

If anyone wants to keep in touch for whatever reason, my email's in my profile, and I do have msn running fairly often. For those of you that have no problem revealing your real identities, I'm also on facebook, where Gab (Nightmare) made a group of ex-FESSers. So there's another option albeit a conditional one.

EDIT: Corrected some spelling issues...

Competition with Vincent is impossible. He was one of FESS's main contributors, the way I see it.

Indeed, reopening FESS as an Fire Emblem community isn't possible. Everyone who came here in the last call didn't do so because of FE - it was either because of nostalgia, or to check out "what's this FESS people talk so much about." Besides, we don't have the patience needed to deal with the new fanbase. There is no place for FESS in the fandom anymore; its task was important, but its time is long gone.

However, the brief "once a year reunion" seems nice for people to get in touch, etc.

It's set on private so that people who hasn't joined yet can see it, but no one can see its contents. I plan to change that to the
"secret" category until I get some certainty that the main mass of people has joined, so no one would be able to even see the group exists (so as to keep ourselves with a level of privacy, in case you have some issues about it).

As for me, personally, I will grant joa's point that I seem insane in FESS, but seriously, outside I'm kinda serious, with just a random comment every once in a while, so don't think I'm nuts nor anything . The group was seriously made for the purpose of keeping in contact in a more efficient way.
As it stands, the contact list is sort of slow and you have to scroll through a huge name list- Facebook's group system kinda solves that and makes people and things a little easier to find.

Regardless, my email is gaod572sx@hotmail.com. You are all invited to add me in MSN and/or facebook. Don't be afraid, I don't bite

At least as a FE community FESS is still quite dead. As it has been stated before, we didn't come back for FE heck I haven't played any DS FE at all and I'm not interested at all. Reopening for nostalgia is cute and all and if it were to remain open I'd suggest a very lax informal administration of the forums. There are no rookies here, we all know how to behave. Still I believe that, when all is said and done, the "yay FESS is backkkkkkk" craze will fade away and we will return to the abysmal post rates FESS had before you chose to put the old dog out of it's misery Chris.

My only other choice would be to turn FESS into a site that encompasses all SRPGs - think of a site that would have FE alongside Shining Force, Final Fantasy Tactics, Vandal Hearts, etc. - and go from there. To be honest, I didn't have the energy for such an ambitious undertaking back then, and I sure as hell don't have it now. Five years ago? Maybe. But not at this stage of my life.

I say at the end of it, let it run its course and see where things have gone, rather than ask what us peeps want out of FESS now.  Nothing's better than to see whether the dog lies dead, than to ask him whether he'll keel over in the next few days.
