When I first decided to re-open FESS, it was very spur of the moment. Popo showed me something, and I figured I'd get some kicks out of reopening the board, something I figured a few people would have a few hours' fun with.

It's been a week and a half. Members have been coming out of the woodwork left and right, some of whom I haven't heard from in years, and the reception has been massive compared to what I thought it would be. It led me to believe that FESS might not be truly as dead as I thought, though in honesty, considering the friendships I and everyone else have taken from this place, I should have known better. With that said, I never opened FESS up with the intention of keeping it open - really, it should be closed by now - though the reaction has been surprising.

Unfortunately, all good things must come to an end, and I'm going to be closing the site again this weekend, probably on Saturday night.

I know a lot of people have been telling me to just leave it open, because what harm can come of it. Speaking literally, no "harm" can come of anything, but these people kind of miss the point of why I closed FESS in the first place. I didn't want the place to wither down and die after awhile, with just a few people posting in a proverbial circle-jerk, or what we nowadays call "The Ashtray". Call me elitist if you want, but I felt that FESS's legacy, if you want to call it that, was better than to sit, unloved, with a few people going back and forth with something they could do in an IRC or Facebook chat. When I closed up in '08, that ended up being a good decision. That's why I'm standing behind the decision to close up now, despite some calls to stay open.

The numbers are bearing me out, as this JPG shows: http://www.superbusnet.com/pictures/postnumbers.jpg

It's true that we don't have everyone here. I suppose I could "announce" the old thread, but I think that kinda defeats the purpose. I figured a few old timers would turn out, but it turned out to be almost 100. Even then, the numbers have dwindled, slowly but surely, and doing so would only delay the inevitable, especially since most of the people I've seen come back treated it like a nostalgia trip. Nostalgia is a wonderful, terrific thing... but it has a shelf life.

And speaking of nostalgia, not all nostalgia is good. As a few of my personal friends will tell you, not everything about this was sunshine and roses for me. I should not be pissed off about something that happened on FESS in 2010, and a few things I saw really bothered me. I won't elaborate on that. Furthermore, there's things going on that I don't have the time to troubleshoot(I can't even attach the damn picture, and I hear people are having problems uploading avatars).

Regardless, we have the Ex-FESSers group that Nightmare announced before, which is here: http://www.facebook.com/#!/group.php?gid=104065712984109. Note that link, because any future happenings here will be announced there by me, making it the "official" Facebook community on the matter. And yes, in the future, we will have things happening, for special occasions and the like. I'll post those as they happen, and it will probably be as spur of the moment as this one was. Also, I'm going to at least give a cursory glance at things for a main website and possibly expansion into a full-on strategy site, though I can't promise anything due to my daily schedule.

Regardless, this was a blast. You guys really showed me a lot this past week and a half.

Well, it was a matter of time before FESS closed down again. Truth to tell, I'm surprised it lasted as long as it did. It was a lot of fun reconnecting with people I hadn't seen in years (and some I never expected to see again at that). Hell, even getting rid of those three or four bots that showed up was kind of fun in its own way.

I guess I'll see the lot of you around.

Yep, it was fun, but you're right, 'Bus, better to die while at the top then in the gutter.

Well, I'm on the group, so anyone that wants to chill with me can find me there. Just message me if ya want to chat and I'll get on.

And my MSN/AIM stuff still works, so find me there too.

Peace, all, this was a blast I didn't expect.

EDIT: Well, just to say, on the mention of the Avatar's bit, I should STILL have an avatar, since I had it uploaded to FESS, IIRC.

Yeah, this was mundo cool, and there's not much else to be done, other than, it was cool.

Fish to all, and whatnots

Thanks for the awesome pick-me-up 'Bus.  FESS doing something was actually kinda neat, and did affect me, better than most stuff that's been going on in my life lately.

I'd post my sentiments, but rehashing what everyone said seems rather overdone. My contact info is still up on Facebook, just message me any time if you happen to want to talk.

Thanks a ton, FESS, 'til next time.

I'm not quite sure what you mean by "secret". Refresh my memory?

Currently the group is in the "closed" privacy setting, which is:
"Admins must approve requests for new members to join. Anyone can see the group description, but only members can see the Wall, discussion board, and photos."

A "secret" group is another privacy setting that has the following description:
"The group will not appear in search results or in the profiles of its members. Membership is by invitation only, and only members can see the group information and content."

At first I placed it as secret, but since I didn't know the names of everyone, or if anyone created facebook just because of this or something, I changed the settings to "closed" so as to let people see the group existed. It worked fine, since invitations were kinda weird, as Joa told me.
The plan was to keep it really private so that FESSers that prefer to keep their privacy would feel at easy, albeit many have already given their FESSname
