I guess it should be obvious how heavily influenced by European myths the Fire Emblem series is, but there were quite a few things that struck me as particularly similar to other fantasy stories.

Although Fire Emblem 7 came out long before Harry Potter 7, for example, the relationship between Athos and Nergal in the former bears a striking resemblance to the relationship between Dumbledore and Grindelwald in the latter. Of course, the fact that FE7 came out first and there is no evidence that JKR plays video games means that this is probably just a coincidence.

The same probably goes for Lyon in Fire Emblem 8, who also has quite a few similarities to Medivh in the Warcraft series: Innocent young men who become possessed by the Demon King, betray their friends, pretty much destroy their countries, and eventually get killed by their former friends. Granted, there are differences too; Lyon is an obvious case of the road to hell being paved with good intentions, but Medivh wasn't possessed through any fault or good intentions of his own. (It was his mother's good intentions that led to him becoming possessed.)

But I guess all I can prove from these examples is that there is nothing new under the sun.

It should probably be noted that Nergal and Athos were modeled loosely after Garnef and Gato from the original Fire Emblem, which goes to show how unoriginal these characters are. ._.

To be fair, most people here have never played the FE1 or 3 (or played FE7 first), so the characters don't seem so unoriginal to most.

Lyon is representative of just about every human who go off with good intentions chasing after some utopian cure-all ideology but are completely blind to the consequences and implications of said ideology and wind up doing only harm instead of good, which is quite a lot of people.

Well, I can safely say that I don't remember the creator of the game ever saying that Athos was gay for Nergal, so the similarity might not be as apt there.

Well, his behavior is the case of a lot of villains. It's the "enemy that wants good by any circumstances" scenario.

In any case, I thought it was nice there was Hector and Durandal, though Hector had the wrong weapon. So I suppose that was just coincidence. It was the sword of Roland, however, so that much might not have been coincidence.

I think that the villains who try to make a perfect world by any means necessary (of whom there have been too many even in real life) tend to keep to themselves and not have many, if any, close friends. Subordinates, maybe, but no real friends. I guess that's why I think that Lyon and Medivh are a bit different, because they did have friends... But I know that Stalin didn't trust anybody but himself, and I'm pretty sure that Hitler didn't either.

Touche on the point about Athos not being in love with Nergal, though.

And at this point I bring in Sauzer from Bahamut Lagoon.  I guess you'd lump him in with Lyon and Medivh, but Lyon and Medivh really had friends before they were possessed of insanities various in manner and sinister in nature.  Not so much afterwards.  Shrug.

= friends.
= no friends.

(Now I need a Medivh smiley...fwahahahaha...)

As far as the Dumbledore bit goes:  I'm still wondering who the hell cares or what the hell difference it makes... </3

Yes, and the time and manner in which she responded with the revelation was kind of...Well, odd. It had nothing to do with Dumbledore's sexuality, and the series is now completely over...

I can't believe I forgot this thread existed. I thought I should mention that Marth and Ellis are probably named after Mars and Eris (god of war and goddess of strife and discord, and siblings, for those of you who missed my blunder). I hope you will all pardon me for posting it again here, but it really belongs here rather than on a separate thread, as the powers that be were quick to remind me.
