Is it possible to hack the game in a way that allows you to use characters like...

It might be possible, but I don't know if there's a way to re-encrypt the data. If there was a way, I also don't know if there's a way to re-compress the edited file ^^;;;

With the Wii being able to do that there's no reason for them to not update the game every now and then.
Why?

Trial map characters only exist as novelty and don't do anything aside from allowing you to point and laugh at the fact that no enemy can harm them. It's why nobody has the patience to unlock Ashnard for any reason but to say they did: It's really not worth it aside from bragging rights (rights which you can just as easily get by doing other things, such as beating the BK or killing Ike in Part 3 where the teams face one another).

A little off-topic but, aside from SSBB, are there any games that do receive updates :?

Maybe because sometimes it's fun to have the ability to use that novelty and enjoy it? I enjoy trial maps simple as that.

No, and Brawl can only handle stages. I'm guessing they'd have to make a new channel that requires the game disc to make updates. And unless they unlock the SD card or a hard drive for accessing channels directly, it cannot be very big.

Someone will find a way to re-encrypt the data eventually, it's just a matter of how long.

Does it really render the game to be that much less enjoyable for you?

Then again, maybe I'm just a tad annoyed because this reminds me of how FE9 was rendered to the point of being completely unplayable for some people soley because there wasn't a support archive...

No it doesn't. But beyond the 2nd playthrough there isn't much incentive for replaying it again IMO. I do enjoy playing it again it would just be fun for the hell of it to use characters like the BK or Lekain.

And it never bothered me that we didn't get a support archive in FE9.

Trial Maps are the funnest, I to am disappointed they were taken out (heh Jarod would of been cool to use). Not a game breaking lose, but it was one of those things that rewarded you for playing again.

And I don't care if they suck (FE9 Oliver) or are invincible (Ashnard), it's just the novelty of legitimately using them that's great.

Why not? The replay value in FE games has always been to play through using units that you didn't use the last time around (or in the case of FE4, try different pairings for different sets of children), not play through as many times as possible to unlock lots of stuff. I'll admit that it adds to the incentive, but it's not the main one the series has had since FE1.

As camus had said, and I agree, it's nice to play with certain characters, even if they're only for a chapter.

It's a dual-win-win.  You get to play with characters like bosses or so, and then you also get to replay the game with other characters.  Sooooooo that's why it's nice to have it, and why, for some, we end up losing some appreciate for the game and its fun factor.

Bumped with permission from Sword Saint : o

Found some interesting things while delving into the BG images.

Firstly, my favourite: the pre-release game logo. I also found a "To be Continued" image, but I have a feeling its from the 2-chapter demo.

Next are sketches of Micaiah's healing hand and Rafiel with wolves.

There's also this amusing mock image. For those who can't read Japanese, the name is Dheginsea and the class is Light Sage XD

Finally I noticed quite a few BG images that were cut (FE9 didn't have any that I can remember). These included several (most likely) CGs:

405 Serenes Forest- Hetzel
109 Priestess's return
404 Apostle and Advisors
473 Black Dragon tribe
474 Lehran and mob
473 ????? blood (too lazy to look up the unknown Japanese)
473 Misaha and Lillia
301 Rafiel and Begnion

(The actual images are just blank.)

...And while I'm here, there's also several FE9 CGs but at much higher resolution- around 640 x 480 pixels (such as this one) : o

(You can look for them on my site *shameless plug*)

And with this, my final commitment to FESS is complete.  Yuyuko was defeated on Normal without continuing.  The victorious Sakuya has taken her place!

I'm afraid it's true...theshim is A Terrible Person
